They had 3 of each sex, so they could make 3^2 = 9 combinations of father/mother = much more genetic diversity than what they have now. If they only have 3 pairs, each with 2 offspring, then each of those 2 offspring can only go with the offspring of 2 others...

Generation 1: The original individuals, paired like AB CD EF, each have 2 kids.
Generation 2: Kids with AB, CD, EF genes. To avoid inbreeding, AB goes with CD, EF and CD goes with EF
Generation 3: Kids with ABCD, ABEF, CDEF genes

Now there must already be inbreeding.. Not good.

If they made kids like I said, we would have:
AB AD AF, CB CD CF, EB ED EF

Inbreeding will happen much later :) And if it's 3+ generations apart, then the effects are negligible.

SarenAreth • 2 years ago

Woopsie, on second thought...

Generation 3:
ABCD ADCB AFCB CBED CFEB
ABCF ADCF AFCD CBEF CFED
ABED ADEB AFEB CDEB
ABEF ADEF AFED CDEF

There will still be inbreeding at generation 4... >.<

The only difference is that there are a lot more gene combinations, so maybe some offspring will have less deficiencies than others? I wanted to save the anime's logic, but truth be told 6 people is just not enough to restart humanity. If it ever gets down to that number, we're doomed lol.

Uzair Ahmed • 2 years ago

That would explain why the population is so low after 3700 years...

Krescent Wolf • 2 years ago

Effectively they dont have enough to avoid inbreeding entirely, but just enough to avoid the worst case scenario of direct incest. That's as much as the logic can manage. XD

will we got alabama thou 🤣

client 0 • 2 years ago

why the hell did you do the math for that man

SarenAreth • 2 years ago

cuz it's interesting to think about if a catastrophe ever leads humanity to only consist of a few individuals, or how many humans u need to start a colony on another planet.

BibbleBlanks • 3 months ago

Because people are obsessed with s*x. Well, it is kinda an obvious consideration because it's the only thing keeping humans from extinction. Idk about the obsession with incest though.

Nocturnal Pyro-sama • 1 year ago

I think those offspring with more defects would have had a harder time finding mates, which means only those with few or none would’ve passed their genes on

Hal • 2 years ago

I thank you sir for doing this kind of thing. I am also interested in these kind of things however I am not smart enough and am too lazy to do these kind of things also. I like Math but am stupid for it.

ANIMETOR • 2 years ago

well .. to be fair, the goal was never to restart humanity and repopulate earth. it was just meant to give people a head start if someone ever woke up from petrification to not be alone - senku, best case scenario. so they maybe even had a rule that prohibited inbreeding in place? (looking at mantle .. maybe not xD). we also dont know how many kids they had. i actually thought it was only four at first.. but the flashbacks show different constellations of four children with different hair and maybe gender?.. so there might be more than that. if not, then it was even harder than any of your models to avoid inbreeding. two of those children definitely share the same parents already.

Sarkross • 1 year ago

Not a problem, 3rd/4th generation inbreeding has the perfect balance between distance and proximity to have the best outcome in matter of children. Genes are distant enough to avoid consanguinity, and are close enough to perfectly match. ( Yeah, there is a phenomenon opposite to "Consanguinity Depression" called " Hybrid Depression" which could cause problem with children genetic because parents genes are too much different. Scientists work on it to understand)

So you are telling me 5 scientists who were qualified enough to get to space didn't even attempt to restart civilization, but they did leave a message to some kid with a be it abnormal interest in science to do it?

Cringe weeb • 1 year ago

I don't think they have a good understanding of the very fundamentals of science unlike Senku, because you don't need all the knowledge required to build the object than to use it. Stupid example : You don't know how to build a computer but you can use it very well. Same things applies with astronauts, they probably can't build technological objects by themselves, especially with resources on an island, thus they cannot pass on the knowledge to the next generation. But hey the civilization didn't start from cave-man time at least, since they passed down crucial knowledge such as moral or language to the future generations. Though they shouldn't be able to communicate very well with Senku since a language changes in adequation with the human needs, especially in such a long period of time (3700 years).

P.S : My dearest apologies for my poor English, it's not my native language and it makes my reply very hard to read.

LabanBes • 1 year ago

Like they stayed in an island, not even in a city or an island developed for tourism, just a sorry little island

Dbz Directioner • 1 year ago

I was Thinking the same, they should have been able to preserve Technology. Civilization shouldn't have reverted back to cave-man time.

Lunara3923 • 2 years ago

Considering the 3700 years of incest they’ve probably gone through so many mutations they probably aren’t actually homosapiens anymore, though I am curious as to what types of species have evolved in that time period.

Okay so according to google, modern humans evolved around 200,000 years ago. From then its taken us that exact amount of years to become 7billion people to inhabit earth now. So with around 6 people inhabiting earth initially, its taken them 3,700 years to become around 40 people in total in present day.

Math working out:
200000 subtract 3700 = 196300 (this is the year difference)
7 billion subtract 40 = "six billion nine hundred ninety-nine million nine hundred ninety-nine thousand nine hundred sixty" (this is the amount of people in difference)

So: "six billion nine hundred ninety-nine million nine hundred ninety-nine thousand nine hundred sixty" subtracted by 196300 = 35659.7043301

For earth to reach up to 7billion from early humans of 6 people it should take around 35659 people to be born each year until it becomes 200,000 years of human inhabitation on earth to reach 7billion in their present day. This involves the gradual build up of reproducing such that the number of babies born will increase as the years increases. (Not going to calculate that cause im to dumb and it'll take too much time and im just lazy.)

However, in the anime it doesn't seem possible that its taken them almost 4 centuries to become 40 people. Thats like 10 people per century.

Hence/in conclusion: the world of anime does not correspond to the world of reality.

HENCE: my working out was for absolutely no reason.

The End.

p.s if some smart dude contradicts my math, then go ahead dude. I had no idea what i was doing anyway.

Some inbreeding right there,

Saw some other post saying it was no big deal with 6 people, and it takes 3 generations before everyone has everyone's blood, and inbreeding is inevitable, so it is far enough apart...

But that is not how it works.

No new blood is ever added, and from that point on, every relation will be an inbred one, and inbreds inbreeding and so on.

This will have 2 effects. Every hereditary desease no one has a gene for suddenly no longer exists, and every hereditary desease someone, even if it is only one person, has, will appear everywhere all of a sudden with abnormal rates.

Would actually explain the bad eyesight of 2 seperate people, maybe someone had a gene for it.

Don't ask for sources here, but read somewhere a while ago that you needed about a thousand people for it not to pose any problems.
